What are seed crackers?

Delicious, crispy and super healthy, these seed crackers are a great vegetarian and vegan friendly snack for you to munch on whenever you’re hungry! They’re a great lactose and gluten-free snack! Enjoy these tasty crackers with any accompaniment of your choice.

These seed crackers are some of the easiest crackers you can ever make. So quick, easy and a perfect low-carb snack.

What is nutritional yeast and can I replace it?

Nutritional yeast is a vegan cheese substitute. However, if you don’t have access to it, you can skip it! Alternatively, you can substitute it with a tablespoon or two of your favorite cheese too if you like! Mozzarella and cheddar work great for this recipe.

How thin or thick do the crackers need to be?

Ideally, you want the crackers to be 3-4 mm thick! Crackers that are too thin will crack in the oven while baking whereas crackers that are too thick will not cook well from the inside and will look more like cookies instead.

How to make this recipe kid friendly?

Most kids don’t like seeds, especially if they are clearly visible! To make these for kids, I recommend grounding all the seeds you intend to use in this recipe. Furthermore, you could add a few tablespoons of grated cheese. They will enjoy these super healthy crackers without any complaints!

Can I skip the ground flax seeds?

Flax seed is a vital ingredient that binds everything together. However, you can replace it with more oat flour if you like. However, just be careful with the amount of water you use. Grounded flax seeds absorb a lot of water, hence if you are only using oat flour, the recipe would not call for as much water as it would otherwise!

Which seeds can I use for this recipe?

You can literally use any seeds of your choice to make these crackers including chia, sesame, pumpkin, sunflower, flax, melon or anything else. You can also make this recipe using any chopped nuts of your choice.

Can I make the oat flour at home?

Yes, simply grind some rolled oats in your food processor to make oat flour. You can do the same for the flax seeds. Grind your flax seeds in your food processor to make the grounded flax seeds!

Which type of flax seeds should I use?

You can use either grounded brown or golden flax seeds for this recipe, both work equally well!

Can I use these recipes to make sweet crackers?

Yes you can! I’ve never tried this before but you certainly can replace the black pepper, salt and seeds with some sugar and nuts instead!

How do I serve these seed crackers?

You can enjoy these crackers as they are, or with a cup of tea or coffee. If you want to go the extra mile, you can serve them with some hummus, muhammara or as a part of your charcuterie board.

Can I make the seed crackers in advance and store it?

Absolutely! You can make these crackers in advance and store them for weeks. Ensure to keep them in an airtight container while storing them. If your crackers become soft, just pop them in the oven again and they’ll become crispy and hard.

Any substitute for the ingredients mentioned?

  1. You can substitute the pumpkin, sunflower, melon and chia seeds with any seeds of your choice. Other options include sesame, hemp or poppy seeds.

  2. You can replace nutritional yeast with any regular or vegan cheese of your choice.

Any cooking tips for this recipe?

  1. Ensure your ingredients are well incorporated when you are making the dough. If the dough is too wet, add a spoonful of oat flour and if your dough is too dry and crumbly, add water, a spoonful at a time.

  2. When rolling out the dough, do not put too much pressure as this will result in broken crackers.

  3. Keep an eye on your oven! If the crackers begin to crack in the oven, reduce your oven temperature immediately! Remove them from the oven if you think they’re done.
